Creature Stealing & Thief Consumables

Players with the Stealing skill can pickpocket special consumable items from monsters. These items include stat-boosting balms, protective lotions, healing consumables, and unique thief-themed equipment. This system rewards players who invest in the Stealing skill with access to powerful temporary buffs and utility items that cannot be obtained any other way.

Stealing from Creatures

Requirements

To steal special items from creatures, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  • 100 or higher Stealing skill.
  • You must be in a Felucca dungeon or a Champion Spawn area.
  • The target creature must be wild — you cannot steal from tamed or summoned creatures.
  • The creature must not have already been stolen from — each creature can only be pickpocketed once.

How It Works

Use your Stealing skill on an eligible creature. If you succeed, a random special item is placed directly into your backpack. If the creature has already been stolen from (by you or anyone else), you will be told there is nothing left to steal.

Success Chance

Your chance of successfully stealing a special item depends on your Stealing skill level and the creature's fame:

Skill bonus:

Stealing Skill Bonus
120.0 (GM+) +10%
110.1 – 119.9 +8%
100.1 – 110.0 +5%
100.0 +2%

Fame bonus:

Creature Fame Bonus
25,000+ (very high) +5%
20,000 – 24,999 +3%
15,000 – 19,999 +2%
10,000 – 14,999 +1%

These bonuses stack, so a Legendary thief (120 Stealing) stealing from a high-fame creature has up to a 15% chance per attempt.

Smuggler's Edge

There is also a passive stealing mechanic called Smuggler's Edge that can trigger with a 5% chance during encounters with creatures. When it triggers, it uses a calculated stealing skill (at least 80-110, or your real skill if higher) and applies the same chance formula as active stealing, with small additional bonuses based on your real Stealing skill level.

Smuggler's Edge can yield the full range of special items, including the Smuggler's Lantern and Smuggler's Tool Box, which cannot be obtained through regular active stealing.

The Smuggler's Edge is available in the UO store.

Stealable Items

Consumable Healing Items

Item Effect Cooldown Notes
Seed of Life Instantly restores 25–40 hit points 10 minutes Consumed on use. Stackable. Will not overheal — if you are at full health, it is not consumed.
Mana Draught Instantly restores 25–40 mana 10 minutes Consumed on use. Will not be consumed if you are already at full mana.
Gem of Salvation Offers automatic resurrection upon death 6 hours Blessed (never lost on death). When you die with one in your backpack, a resurrection prompt appears. Consumed when used. The 6-hour cooldown is per-character.

Balms (Stat Boosts)

Balms provide a temporary stat increase for 30 minutes. You may only have one balm or lotion effect active at a time — applying a new one replaces the current effect.

Item Effect Duration
Balm of Strength +10 Strength 30 minutes
Balm of Wisdom +10 Intelligence 30 minutes
Balm of Swiftness +10 Dexterity 30 minutes

Lotions (Defensive Buffs)

Lotions provide temporary defensive bonuses for 30 minutes. Like balms, only one balm or lotion effect can be active at a time.

Item Effect Duration
Balm of Protection Reduces incoming damage by 50–100% per hit (random roll each time) 30 minutes
Stone Skin Lotion +30 Physical Resist, but −5 Cold Resist and −5 Fire Resist 30 minutes
Life Shield Lotion Reduces life drain damage by 50–100% per hit (random roll each time) 30 minutes

When any balm or lotion effect expires (or is replaced), you receive a message that the effects have worn off, and all associated stat or resistance modifications are removed.

Smuggler's Equipment

These items are only available through Smuggler's Edge passive stealing and cannot be obtained via regular active creature stealing.

Item Description
Smuggler's Lantern A lantern with the Spell Channeling property, allowing you to cast spells while it is equipped. Each lantern has a randomized hue.
Smuggler's Tool Box A reusable lockpick dispenser. Double-click to receive 5–12 lockpicks per use. Starts with 10 uses and recharges 1 use per day (up to a maximum of 20 uses).

Usage Notes

One Balm or Lotion at a Time

You can only be under the effect of one balm or lotion at any given time. If you try to apply a second one while already buffed, you will receive a message saying you are already under an effect. The existing effect must expire (after 30 minutes) before you can apply a different one.

Seed of Life and Mana Draught Cooldowns

Both the Seed of Life and Mana Draught share a 10-minute cooldown individually (each has its own separate timer). If you try to use one before the cooldown expires, you will be told how many seconds remain. The healing amount is random between 25 and 40, capped at however much health or mana you are actually missing.

Gem of Salvation

The Gem of Salvation is unique in that it triggers automatically on death — you do not need to use it beforehand. As long as it is in your backpack when you die, a resurrection gump will appear after a brief delay. If you accept, you are resurrected at your death location, the gem is consumed, and a 6-hour cooldown begins before another gem can be used.

The gem is Blessed, so it is never lost when you die. This makes it a reliable safety net to carry at all times.

Tips

  • Carry a Gem of Salvation at all times when adventuring in dangerous areas — since it is blessed, there is no risk to keeping one in your pack.
  • The Balm of Protection's damage reduction is extremely powerful (50–100% per hit), making it arguably the best consumable for dangerous combat situations.
  • Stone Skin Lotion's +30 Physical Resist is substantial but comes at the cost of −5 to both Cold and Fire resists. Consider your enemies' damage types before applying it.
  • Since each creature can only be stolen from once, target high-fame creatures in Felucca dungeons and Champion Spawns for the best success rates.
  • The Smuggler's Tool Box is a long-term investment — with daily recharging, it provides a steady supply of lockpicks without needing Tinkering skill.
  • Seeds of Life are stackable, making them easy to carry in bulk. Keep a stack handy for quick in-combat healing between bandage applications.
