Tracking

Tracking is a skill that allows you to locate nearby creatures and players by scanning the area around you. At higher skill levels, your detection radius extends well beyond what you can see on screen, making it an invaluable tool for hunters, tamers, and explorers navigating the wilds of Banes World.

How It Works

Using the Tracking skill is a two-step process:

Step 1 — Choose a Category

When you activate the skill, you are presented with four categories to choose from:

Category What It Finds
Animals All animal-type creatures (horses, birds, bears, hinds, etc.)
Monsters All monster-type creatures (dragons, daemons, elementals, etc.)
Human NPCs Non-player humans (vendors, quest NPCs, healers, etc.)
Players Other player characters in range

At this step, the game checks your skill to determine whether the attempt succeeds or fails. If you fail, you will receive the message: "You see no evidence of those in the area."

Step 2 — Select a Target

If your skill check succeeds, a list of matching creatures or players within your tracking range will appear. The list can display up to 12 targets at a time, sorted by distance from closest to farthest. Click on the one you wish to track.

Once selected, a tracking arrow will appear on your screen pointing toward the target's location. The arrow updates as the target moves. The arrow will disappear and you will receive the message "You have lost your quarry" if:

  • The target moves too far away (beyond double your tracking range)
  • The target is deleted or leaves the map
  • You right-click the arrow to cancel tracking
  • A hidden target with higher access level conceals themselves

Tracking Range

Your tracking range is a radius measured outward from your character in all directions. The range is calculated at the moment you choose a category (Animals, Monsters, etc.), not when you first activate the skill.

For reference, the visible game screen extends roughly 24 tiles from your character to the edge.

Range by Skill Level

Tracking Skill Detection Radius Past Screen Edge Arrow Follow Range
0 10 tiles 20 tiles
50 15 tiles 30 tiles
100 20 tiles Screen edge 40 tiles
105 33 tiles 9 tiles 66 tiles
110 46 tiles 22 tiles 92 tiles
115 59 tiles 35 tiles 118 tiles
120 72 tiles 48 tiles (full screen) 144 tiles

Note: At skill 100, your tracking range matches the edge of your visible screen. Above 100, the range accelerates significantly — by 120 you can detect creatures a full screen beyond what you can see in every direction. The tracking arrow's follow range is always double your detection range, giving you time to chase down your quarry before losing the trail.

Tracking Players

Tracking other players is more difficult than tracking creatures. The game compares the tracker's skills against the target's evasion skills:

Tracker's Advantage: Tracking skill (counted double) + Detect Hidden skill

Target's Defense: Hiding skill + Stealth skill

A higher combined tracking score relative to the target's hiding score means a greater chance of detecting them.

Special Cases:

Condition Effect
Elf Race Requires double the tracking skill to detect (tracker's skill is halved)
Horrific Beast Form Easier to track (reduces target's evasion)
Vampiric Embrace Sets a minimum evasion floor, making stealthy vampires harder to find
Wraith Form Increases target's evasion, making them harder to track

Skill Gain

Tracking provides two opportunities for skill gain each time you use it:

  1. Active Check — When you first activate the skill and the category selection gump appears, a skill check is rolled. This check has a low difficulty ceiling (21.1), so it will stop providing gains early on.
  2. Passive Check — When you select a category and the game scans for targets, a second skill check runs with a difficulty range that scales up to your skill cap. This is where the bulk of your gains at higher skill levels will come from.

Tip: You can use Tracking every 10 seconds. For passive gains at high skill, you need the initial check to succeed so the passive check fires — at high skill this is nearly guaranteed. Just keep clicking!

Stalking Bonus

When you actively track a target, the game records the target's position at the moment you begin tracking. If you later engage that target in combat, you receive a Stalking Bonus based on how far the target has moved since you started tracking. This bonus is capped at:

10 + (Tracking Skill / 10)

At 120 skill, the maximum stalking bonus is 22. The bonus is consumed on use — once applied, you must track the target again to build a new one.

Tips for Trackers

  • For Tamers: Tracking is one of the best ways to locate rare spawns. At 120 skill, your 72-tile radius covers a massive area — nearly three full screens across. If a creature is spawned nearby, you'll find it.
  • Hidden Creatures: Standard creatures that are hidden (such as ambush mobs) will not appear in tracking results. Only hidden players can be detected through tracking, and only if your skill check against their Hiding/Stealth succeeds.
  • Body Type Matters: Creatures are sorted into categories based on their body type, not their name. A creature with a human body will appear under "Human NPCs" even if it's a monster by nature. If you can't find something, try a different category.
  • Right-Click to Cancel: You can right-click the tracking arrow at any time to stop tracking and free up the arrow for a new target.
  • Cooldown: There is a 10-second cooldown between uses of the Tracking skill.
