Overview
Banes World features a greatly expanded resource system beyond standard Ultima Online. In addition to the original ore, wood, and leather types, the shard includes custom higher-tier resources that require skills above 100.0 to harvest and produce increasingly powerful crafted items. This guide covers all available resource types, how to obtain them, the elementals that guard them, the special tools used to harvest them, and the runic crafting tools they yield.
Mining
Mining is performed with a pickaxe or shovel on mountain and cave tiles. Each swing harvests one ore (two in Felucca). Resource banks cover an 8×8 tile area and hold between 10 and 34 ore, respawning every 10 to 20 minutes.
Banes World has 14 ore types, from Iron up through Platinum. The five highest tiers — Blaze, Ice, Toxic, Electrum, and Platinum — require skill above 100.0, meaning you will need a Mining Power Scroll to harvest them.
Ore Types
| Ore | Skill Required | Vein Chance | Elemental |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron | 0.0 | 22.0% | — |
| Dull Copper | 60.0 | 9.0% | Yes |
| Shadow Iron | 65.0 | 8.5% | Yes |
| Copper | 70.0 | 8.0% | Yes |
| Bronze | 75.0 | 7.5% | Yes |
| Gold | 80.0 | 7.0% | Yes |
| Agapite | 85.0 | 6.5% | Yes |
| Verite | 90.0 | 6.0% | Yes |
| Valorite | 95.0 | 5.5% | Yes |
| Blaze | 100.0 | 5.0% | Yes |
| Ice | 105.0 | 4.5% | Yes |
| Toxic | 110.0 | 4.0% | Yes |
| Electrum | 115.0 | 3.5% | Yes |
| Platinum | 119.0 | 3.0% | Yes |
Each vein has a 0.5% chance to fall back to Iron if your skill check fails, meaning even if you find a rare vein you may still get Iron ore on occasion.
Bonus Mining Resources
At 100.0 Mining or higher, you have a small chance per swing to receive a rare gem alongside your ore. These include Blue Diamond, Dark Sapphire, Ecru Citrine, Fire Ruby, Perfect Emerald, Turquoise, and Small Piece of Blackrock, each at approximately 0.1% chance.
Lumberjacking
Lumberjacking is performed with an axe on trees. Each swing harvests 10 logs (20 in Felucca). Resource banks cover a 4×3 tile area and hold between 25 and 45 logs, respawning every 20 to 30 minutes.
Banes World has 12 wood types, from Regular through Petrified. The five highest tiers — Ebony, Bamboo, Purple Heart, Redwood, and Petrified — require skill above GM, meaning you will need a Lumberjacking Power Scroll.
Wood Types
| Wood | Skill Required | Vein Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Regular | 0.0 | 7.0% |
| Oak | 20.0 | 14.0% |
| Ash | 30.0 | 13.0% |
| Yew | 40.0 | 12.0% |
| Heartwood | 50.0 | 11.0% |
| Bloodwood | 60.0 | 9.0% |
| Frostwood | 70.0 | 8.0% |
| Ebony | 80.0 | 6.0% |
| Bamboo | 90.0 | 5.0% |
| Purple Heart | 100.0 | 5.0% |
| Redwood | 110.0 | 5.0% |
| Petrified | 119.0 | 5.0% |
Each vein has a 0.3–0.4% chance to fall back to Regular wood on a failed skill check.
Bonus Lumberjacking Resources
While chopping trees, you may occasionally find Bark Fragments (10%), Luminescent Fungi (3%), Switches (2%), Parasitic Plants (1%), or Brilliant Amber (1%) as bonus drops.
Leather
Banes World has 11 leather types, from Regular through Ethereal. Unlike ore and wood, leather is not directly harvested from the ground — it comes from skinning creatures that drop hides. The standard base types (Regular, Spined, Horned, Barbed) drop naturally from creatures. The custom higher-tier leathers (Polar through Ethereal) can be obtained using the Gargoyle's Knife, a special carving tool.
Leather Types
| Leather | Source |
|---|---|
| Regular | Standard hide creatures |
| Spined | Spined hide creatures |
| Horned | Horned hide creatures |
| Barbed | Barbed hide creatures |
| Polar | Gargoyle's Knife on Regular+ hide creatures |
| Synthetic | Gargoyle's Knife on Spined+ hide creatures |
| Blaze | Gargoyle's Knife on Horned+ hide creatures |
| Daemonic | Gargoyle's Knife on Horned+ hide creatures |
| Shadow | Gargoyle's Knife on Barbed+ hide creatures |
| Frost | Gargoyle's Knife on Polar+ hide creatures |
| Ethereal | Gargoyle's Knife on Barbed+ hide creatures |
Leather elementals also drop 50 hides and 50 scales of their corresponding type when slain, making them a valuable secondary source of higher-tier leather.
Elementals
Elementals are hostile creatures that may spawn while harvesting resources or using special tools. They scale in difficulty based on the tier of resource they guard — higher-tier elementals have significantly more hit points, damage, resistances, and fame. All elementals have Auto Dispel.
Ore Elementals
Ore elementals can spawn when mining with a Gargoyle's Pickaxe. There is a 15% chance per swing to spawn an ore elemental matching the ore type you just mined. Iron ore elementals will not spawn — only Dull Copper and above.
Each non-Iron ore elemental carries valuable loot:
| Elemental | Loot |
|---|---|
| Dull Copper | 25 Dull Copper Ore, Runic Hammer or Runic Tinker Tools (5 uses), 1–2 random gems |
| Shadow Iron | 25 Shadow Iron Ore, Runic Hammer or Runic Tinker Tools (5 uses), 1–2 random gems |
| Copper | 25 Copper Ore, Runic Hammer or Runic Tinker Tools (5 uses), 1–2 random gems |
| Bronze | 25 Bronze Ore, Runic Hammer or Runic Tinker Tools (5 uses), 1–3 random gems |
| Gold | 25 Gold Ore, Runic Hammer or Runic Tinker Tools (5 uses), 1–3 random gems |
| Agapite | 25 Agapite Ore, Runic Hammer or Runic Tinker Tools (5 uses), 1–3 random gems |
| Verite | 25 Verite Ore, Runic Hammer or Runic Tinker Tools (5 uses), 1–3 random gems |
| Valorite | 25 Valorite Ore, Runic Hammer or Runic Tinker Tools (5 uses), 2 types × 1–2 random gems |
| Blaze | 25 Blaze Ore, Runic Hammer or Runic Tinker Tools (5 uses), 2 types × 1–2 random gems |
| Ice | 25 Ice Ore, Runic Hammer or Runic Tinker Tools (5 uses), 2 types × 1–2 random gems |
| Toxic | 25 Toxic Ore, Runic Hammer or Runic Tinker Tools (5 uses), 2 types × 1–2 random gems |
| Electrum | 25 Electrum Ore, Runic Hammer or Runic Tinker Tools (5 uses), 2 types × 1–3 random gems |
| Platinum | 25 Platinum Ore, Runic Hammer or Runic Tinker Tools (5 uses), 2 types × 1–3 random gems |
Whether an ore elemental drops a Runic Hammer (for Blacksmithing) or Runic Tinker Tools (for Tinkering) is determined randomly — approximately 25% chance for Tinker Tools and 75% for a Runic Hammer.
The random gems that drop include Blue Diamond, Dark Sapphire, Ecru Citrine, Fire Ruby, Perfect Emerald, Turquoise, White Pearl, and Brilliant Amber.
Leather Elementals
Leather elementals spawn with a 20% chance when using a Gargoyle's Knife on a creature corpse. The tier of elemental that spawns depends on the hide type of the original creature — higher-tier creatures can produce higher-tier leather elementals.
Non-Regular leather elementals drop a Runic Sewing Kit (5 uses) of their corresponding leather type, plus 50 hides and 50 scales.
Wood Elementals
Wood elementals spawn with a 15% chance when chopping trees with a Gargoyle's Axe. The tier of elemental matches the wood type being harvested. Regular wood elementals will not spawn — only Oak and above.
Non-Regular wood elementals drop Runic Fletcher's Tools (5 uses) of their corresponding wood type plus 50 logs.
Special Harvesting Tools
Several special tools exist that enhance harvesting or unlock access to higher-tier resources and runic tool drops. These tools can be obtained from the Master of the Arts boss as well as from various gargoyle creatures found throughout the world.
Gargoyle's Pickaxe
A special mining pickaxe with 101–125 uses. It works as both a mining tool and a one-handed weapon (Bleed Attack / Mortal Strike).
The Gargoyle's Pickaxe can be found as loot from Undead Gargoyles, Stone Monsters, Stone Gargoyles, Gargoyle Enforcers, Gargoyle Destroyers, and Gargoyles. It may also drop from the Master of the Arts.
When you mine with a Gargoyle's Pickaxe, it shifts the ore vein up by one tier on every swing. If you are mining a Copper vein, the pickaxe will yield Bronze ore instead. If you are mining a Shadow Iron vein, you will get Copper, and so on. This shift happens automatically — just equip or use it like a normal pickaxe.
Additionally, each swing has a 15% chance to spawn an ore elemental matching the type of ore you harvested. This is the primary method for obtaining Runic Hammers and Runic Tinker Tools.
Prospector's Tool
A tool with 50 uses that permanently upgrades a mining vein by one tier until the resource bank respawns. It can also be used as a weapon (Crushing Blow / Shadow Strike).
Unlike the Gargoyle's Pickaxe (which shifts the vein on-the-fly for each swing), the Prospector's Tool changes the bank itself. Double-click it and target a mining spot to upgrade that spot's vein. The upgrade persists for everyone mining that bank until it respawns (10–20 minutes). A bank can only be prospected once — if you or someone else has already prospected it, you will be told the ore has already been prospected.
The Prospector's Tool does not trigger elemental spawns and cannot shift a vein beyond the highest tier. It is best used in combination with a Gargoyle's Pickaxe: prospect the bank up one tier, then mine with the pickaxe to shift it up a second tier, reaching ore two tiers above the bank's natural vein.
Gargoyle's Axe
A special lumberjacking axe with 45–125 uses. It works as both a chopping tool and a one-handed weapon (Bleed Attack / Mortal Strike).
The Gargoyle's Axe can be found as loot from Gargoyle Guardians and Enslaved Gargoyles. It may also drop from the Master of the Arts.
When you chop trees with a Gargoyle's Axe, it shifts the wood vein up by one tier on every swing. If you are chopping an Ash vein, the axe will yield Yew logs instead. This functions identically to how the Gargoyle's Pickaxe works for mining.
Additionally, each swing has a 15% chance to spawn a wood elemental matching the type of wood you harvested. This is the primary method for obtaining Runic Fletcher's Tools.
Gargoyle's Knife
A carving knife with 45–125 uses (Infectious Strike / Disarm). Double-click it and target a creature corpse to carve it.
The Gargoyle's Knife can be found as loot from Gargoyle Shades and Fire Gargoyles. It may also drop from the Master of the Arts.
Instead of producing the creature's normal hide type, the knife upgrades the hides to a higher tier selected randomly from a pool based on the original creature's hide type. The higher the original hide type, the higher the potential upgrade:
| Original Hide Type | Possible Upgraded Hides |
|---|---|
| Regular | Spined, Horned, Barbed, Polar |
| Spined | Horned, Barbed, Polar, Synthetic, Blaze |
| Horned | Barbed, Polar, Synthetic, Blaze, Daemonic, Shadow |
| Barbed | Polar, Synthetic, Blaze, Daemonic, Shadow, Frost, Ethereal |
| Polar | Synthetic, Blaze, Daemonic, Shadow, Frost, Ethereal |
| Synthetic | Blaze, Daemonic, Shadow, Frost, Ethereal |
| Blaze | Daemonic, Shadow, Frost, Ethereal |
| Daemonic | Shadow, Frost, Ethereal |
| Shadow | Frost, Ethereal |
| Frost+ | Ethereal |
There is a 20% chance each time you carve that a leather elemental will spawn and attack you. The tier of elemental depends on the original creature's hide type. Hides carved in Felucca yield double the normal amount.
Enhanced Pickaxe
A special pickaxe that grants a 20% chance to double the ore harvested on each swing. When it triggers, you receive a bonus piece of ore and a notification message. Does not trigger elemental spawns or vein shifts.
Enhanced Hatchet
A special axe that grants a 20% chance to double the logs harvested on each swing. When it triggers, you receive a bonus stack of logs and a notification message. Does not trigger elemental spawns or vein shifts.
Harvester's Axe
A special axe that automatically converts harvested logs into boards as you chop, saving you a trip to the sawmill. Each conversion consumes one charge from the axe.
Runic Crafting Tools
Runic tools are the primary reward from the expanded resource system. They allow crafters to produce items with random magical properties, with the quality of those properties scaling based on the resource tier.
Runic Hammers (Blacksmithing)
Used to craft weapons and armor with random magical properties. Higher-tier hammers produce more attributes at higher intensities.
| Resource | Attributes | Intensity Range |
|---|---|---|
| Dull Copper | 1–2 | 25–100% |
| Shadow Iron | 1–3 | 30–100% |
| Copper | 2–3 | 40–100% |
| Bronze | 2–4 | 45–100% |
| Gold | 2–5 | 50–100% |
| Agapite | 3–5 | 55–100% |
| Verite | 3–5 | 65–100% |
| Valorite | 4–6 | 70–100% |
| Blaze | 4–7 | 75–100% |
| Ice | 5–8 | 80–100% |
| Toxic | 5–8 | 90–100% |
| Electrum | 5–9 | 100% |
| Platinum | 6–9 | 105–110% |
Runic Tinker Tools (Tinkering)
Function identically to Runic Hammers but are used with the Tinkering crafting system to produce jewelry and other tinkered items. They share the same attribute and intensity ranges as their corresponding Runic Hammer tier.
Runic Sewing Kits (Tailoring)
Used to craft leather and studded armor with random magical properties.
| Resource | Attributes | Intensity Range |
|---|---|---|
| Spined | 1–3 | 40–100% |
| Horned | 3–4 | 45–100% |
| Barbed | 4–5 | 50–100% |
| Polar | 3–5 | 45–100% |
| Synthetic | 3–5 | 50–100% |
| Blaze | 4–6 | 60–100% |
| Daemonic | 4–7 | 65–100% |
| Shadow | 5–7 | 75–100% |
| Frost | 5–8 | 80–100% |
| Ethereal | 6–9 | 100–110% |
Runic Fletcher's Tools (Bowcraft/Fletching)
Used to craft bows and crossbows with random magical properties. They follow the same tiered attribute and intensity scaling as the other runic tool types.
How to Obtain Runic Tools
Runic tools come from two main sources:
Elementals — The most common source. Kill ore, leather, or wood elementals to loot runic tools with 5 uses. You must use the appropriate Gargoyle tool (Pickaxe, Axe, or Knife) while harvesting to trigger elemental spawns.
Master of the Arts — A powerful boss that drops crafting Power Scrolls and has a chance to award random Runic Tools with 10 uses from any resource tier. The Master of the Arts may also drop Gargoyle tools and Prospector's Tools on its corpse. See the Master of the Arts page for full details.
Gargoyle Creatures — The Gargoyle tools needed to trigger elemental spawns can also be found as loot from various gargoyle-type creatures throughout the world. Hunting gargoyles is the most accessible way to get started with the expanded resource system.
Resource Properties at a Glance
Higher-tier resources provide increasing bonuses when used in crafting. These bonuses apply to armor resistances, weapon damage types, durability, and lower requirements. A few highlights from the top tiers:
Platinum ore provides +8 to all armor resistances, +250 durability, and 100% lower requirements — making it the strongest smithing material available.
Ethereal leather provides +8 to all armor resistances, +250 durability, and 100% lower requirements — the strongest tailoring material.
Petrified wood provides +250 weapon durability and 100% lower requirements — the strongest fletching material.
Tips
- Raising Mining or Lumberjacking above 100.0 requires Power Scrolls. The Master of the Arts is the primary source for crafting-related scrolls.
- The Gargoyle tools are your gateway to runic tools. Always carry a Gargoyle's Pickaxe when mining and a Gargoyle's Axe when chopping — even if an elemental spawns and kills you, the runic tool drops are worth the risk.
- Combine a Prospector's Tool with a Gargoyle's Pickaxe for maximum effect: prospect the bank up one tier, then mine with the pickaxe to shift it up a second tier. This lets you reach ore two tiers above the bank's natural vein.
- Higher-tier elementals scale significantly in power. A Platinum ore elemental is far more dangerous than a Dull Copper one. Bring appropriate gear and supplies.
- Felucca harvesting yields double resources per swing (2 ore or 20 logs), and Gargoyle's Knife carving in Felucca yields double hides. The risk-reward tradeoff may be worth it for dedicated gatherers.
- Runic tools from elementals have 5 uses. Runic tools from the Master of the Arts have 10. Use them wisely on the best base items you can craft.
- The Enhanced Pickaxe and Enhanced Hatchet are excellent farming tools — the 20% bonus resource chance adds up significantly over a long harvesting session.
