Universal Storage Keys are specialized storage items that allow players to consolidate large quantities of resources, scrolls, tools, and other items into a single lightweight keyring. Each key is dedicated to a particular category of items and can hold up to 999,999,999 units per resource entry. Keys can be used directly from a player's backpack or locked down inside a house for shared access, and the crafting system will automatically pull resources from keys when crafting.

Overview

Storage Keys solve the long-standing problem of backpack clutter and bank box overflow. Rather than carrying hundreds of stacked ingots, boards, reagents, or scrolls, a player stores them inside the appropriate key and withdraws only what is needed. Each key weighs just 1 stone regardless of contents, is Blessed by default, and presents a clean gump interface for browsing, withdrawing, and filling.

There are four ways to obtain a Storage Key:

  • Tinkering — Most keys are crafted at the Tinkering menu under the "Miscellaneous" category.
  • Gold Vendor — The Treasure Hunter's Key is purchased from the Gold Vendor on Main Street.
  • UO Store — The Master Keys keyring is purchased from the UO Store using Banes World Bucks.
  • Monster Drops — The Champion Skull Key has a 10% chance to drop from The Greatest Mongbat, and the Pet Accessory Key is a reward from the Tamer's Gauntlet.

Using a Storage Key

Opening

Double-click the key (or use the Open context menu option) while it is in your backpack. A gump window appears showing every item type the key can hold, along with current quantities. If the key is locked down in a house, it can be used by anyone with the appropriate secure access level — right-click and use "Set security" to control who can access it.

Adding Items

There are three ways to add items to a key:

  • Add (context menu) — Right-click the key and select "Add", then target the item you wish to store. The targeting cursor remains active so you can continue adding items one at a time.
  • Fill from Backpack (context menu) — Right-click the key and select "Refill from stock". The key scans your entire backpack (including sub-containers that are not locked or trapped) and automatically absorbs every compatible item it finds.
  • Fill button (gump) — Open the key's gump and click the "Fill entries from backpack" button at the bottom of the window. This works identically to the context menu fill option.

Withdrawing Items

Open the key and click the small button next to any entry that has a quantity greater than zero. The key will withdraw the currently set amount (shown at the top of the gump) and place it in your backpack.

  • Withdrawal Amount — The default withdrawal amount is 100. You can change this by typing a new number into the amount field at the top of the gump and pressing OK. Some keys enforce a minimum withdrawal (for example, the Tool Key withdraws no fewer than 50 uses per tool, and the Runic Tool Key withdraws no fewer than 5 charges).
  • Commodity Deeds — Some keys offer the option to withdraw into a Commodity Deed (indicated by a second button column). This costs 5 gold from your bank box per deed created.

Crafting Integration

When you begin crafting an item, the crafting system automatically searches your backpack for the required resources. If your backpack does not contain enough, the system checks any Storage Keys or Master Keys in your backpack and silently withdraws the missing materials. You do not need to manually withdraw resources before crafting — simply keep your keys in your backpack and craft as normal.

KeyGuard Command

If you want to prevent a specific item from being absorbed into a key during a "Fill from Backpack" operation, use the [KeyGuard command:

  1. Type [KeyGuard in the chat window.
  2. Target the item you wish to protect.
  3. The item is now flagged and will be skipped by all key fill operations.

Repeating the command on the same item toggles the protection off.

Craftable Keys (Tinkering)

All of the following keys are crafted under the Miscellaneous category of the Tinkering skill menu. Every craftable key requires 115.0 Tinkering minimum skill and succeeds reliably at 146.0 Tinkering. All craftable keys share a base material requirement of 150 Platinum Ingots.

Master Keys

The Master Keys item is a special keyring purchased from the UO Store using Banes World Bucks. It consolidates multiple individual Storage Keys into a single item that can hold up to 25 keys. Master Keys are Blessed and weigh 5 stones.

Adding Keys to Master Keys

  1. Double-click the Master Keys (or right-click and select "Open") to open the Master Keys gump.
  2. Click the Add Keys button, or right-click and select "Add".
  3. Target the Storage Key you wish to add. The key must be in your backpack.
  4. The Storage Key is absorbed into the Master Keys. It no longer exists as a separate item.

Restrictions:

  • You cannot add two keys of the same type (for example, two Ingot Keys).
  • Maximum of 25 keys per Master Keys item.

Using Master Keys

The Master Keys gump shows a list of all contained keys with their name and artwork. For each key:

  • Access — Click the Access button to open that key's normal storage gump, just as if you had double-clicked the individual key.
  • Withdraw — Click the Withdraw button to remove the key from the Master Keys and place it back in your backpack as an individual item, with all stored contents intact.
  • Fill entries from backpack — Click the button at the bottom of the gump to perform a Fill from Backpack across all contained keys simultaneously. Every compatible item in your backpack will be routed into the appropriate key.

The crafting system also searches Master Keys when looking for resources, so a single Master Keys item containing your Ingot Key, Wood Key, and Reagent Key is all you need to craft from stored materials.

Storage Entry Types

Storage Keys use different internal storage methods depending on the nature of the items being stored:

Resource Entries

Used for stackable commodities like ingots, boards, reagents, and gems. The key tracks a simple count — add 500 iron ingots and the entry increases by 500, withdraw 100 and it decreases by 100. Most keys use this entry type for the majority of their contents.

Tool Entries

A variant of resource entries designed for tools. Instead of tracking item count, tool entries track uses remaining. When you add a Tinkering Tool with 47 uses, the entry increases by 47. When you withdraw, the key creates a new tool with the requested number of uses (subject to the key's minimum withdrawal amount).

Runic Tool Entries

Similar to tool entries, but specific to runic crafting tools. Each entry tracks a specific tool type and craft resource type (for example, "Verite Runic Hammer" or "Barbed Runic Sewing Kit"). Uses are pooled and withdrawn in the same manner as regular tool entries, with a minimum of 5 charges per withdrawal.

List Entries

Used for items that have unique properties which must be preserved, such as treasure maps, SOS bottles, power scrolls, seeds, and special instruments. Each item is stored individually in a searchable, sortable list. Clicking the entry on the main key gump opens a sub-gump showing all stored items with their details. Items are withdrawn one at a time.

The list gump supports sorting and filtering:

  • Click the up/down arrows on any column header to sort ascending or descending.
  • Type a filter term into the text field at the bottom of a column and click the arrow button to filter visible entries.

Stash Entries

Used for items that must preserve their complete identity — magical properties, names, stats, and all other attributes. The item is physically moved to an internal storage map, and its full set of properties is maintained. The stash gump offers column-based sorting and filtering, with the ability to add or remove display columns via the "Add Column" interface.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Keep your keys in your backpack while crafting. The system auto-withdraws resources, saving you from juggling materials.
  • Use Fill from Backpack regularly after hunting or gathering runs. A quick right-click fill operation clears your pack in seconds.
  • Consolidate into Master Keys once you have several keys. One Master Keys item replaces a handful of individual keys and the Fill operation works across all of them at once.
  • Lock down keys in your house for shared access. When locked down, house co-owners and friends with appropriate secure access can use the key. Right-click the key and use "Set security" to control access.
  • Use [KeyGuard on items you want to keep in your backpack (for example, a specific set of reagents you carry for PvE) so they are not swept up by a fill operation.
  • Commodity Deeds are available on keys that support them. This is handy for trading large quantities — withdraw 60,000 ingots into a deed and hand it to another player.
  • Withdrawal amount defaults to 100. If you frequently withdraw in larger or smaller batches, adjust the amount field in the gump.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What happens to my items if a key is deleted or lost?

All craftable keys are Blessed by default and cannot be looted. Keys inside a Master Keys item are also protected by the Master Keys' Blessed status. If a key is somehow destroyed, stored resources are lost. Always report issues to staff.

Q: Can I use keys while mounted or in combat?

Yes, as long as the key is in your backpack. There are no combat or movement restrictions.

Q: Do keys work with Bulk Order Deeds?

Storage Keys are designed for raw resources, tools, and specific item categories. BODs have their own dedicated BOD Book system.

Q: Can I add items from a bag inside my backpack?

Yes. The Fill from Backpack operation recursively searches all sub-containers in your pack, skipping only locked or trapped containers.

Q: Why won't my key accept a particular item?

Check that the item matches the key's category, is not KeyGuarded, is movable, and is in your backpack. Some entries also reject items with special properties — for example, the Bard's Key instrument entries reject slayer instruments (use the "Instruments" list entry instead), and the Tool Key will not accept runic tools (use the Runic Tool Key).

Q: How does the Wood Key log conversion work?

When you add logs to the Wood Key, each log is converted into 2 boards of the same wood type. For example, adding 50 Oak Logs adds 100 Oak Boards to the key. This matches the standard sawmill conversion rate.
