The Cloak of Humility is a multi-part quest chain centered on the virtue of Humility. Given by Gareth, an emissary of the Rise of Britannia Campaign (RBC), it begins with a trivia quiz, progresses through three charitable donation tasks, and culminates in a unique item-trading puzzle across seven humble citizens of Britannia. The final reward offers a meaningful choice: accept a Gold Shield as a trophy, or refuse the reward and receive the means to earn the legendary Cloak of Humility at the Shrine.

Overview

The quest chain has five sequential parts, each unlocking the next:

  1. Know Thy Humility — Answer questions about the virtue of Humility
  2. Community Service: Museum — Donate to the Vesper Museum
  3. Community Service: Zoo — Donate to the Moonglow Zoo
  4. Community Service: Library — Donate to the Britain Library
  5. Who's Most Humble — Visit seven citizens and solve a trading puzzle

Getting Started

Find Gareth the Emissary of the RBC. He can be found near the Britain crossroads. Speak with him to begin the quest chain.

Quest Chain Walkthrough

Quest 1: Know Thy Humility

Quest Giver Gareth the Emissary of the RBC
Objective Answer 4 questions correctly about the virtue of Humility
Chain Cloak of Humility (Quest 1 of 5)

Gareth introduces himself as a representative of citizens who wish to rejuvenate interest in Britannia's noble heritage of Virtues. He asks if you're interested in following a truly Humble path, then presents you with a quiz.

You must answer 4 questions correctly from a pool of 7 possible questions about Humility. The questions cover its symbols, meanings, colors, opposing vices, associated city, and related dungeon. If you answer incorrectly, Gareth encourages you to seek more knowledge and try again tomorrow (24-hour cooldown).

Study Guide

The questions draw from classic Ultima Virtue lore. Before speaking to Gareth, brush up on the following topics concerning Humility: its symbol (the Shepherd's Crook), its color, the city that embodies it, what opposes it (Pride), and how one finds it. Knowing the basic Virtue system from Ultima lore will serve you well.

Quest 2: Community Service — Museum

Quest Giver Gareth (auto-offered after Quest 1)
Objective Donate to the Vesper Museum collection until you receive a Shepherd's Crook of Humility (Replica), then return it to Gareth
Chain Cloak of Humility (Quest 2 of 5)

Gareth asks you to support the Vesper Museum by donating to their collection. Travel to southern Vesper and find the Museum. Go downstairs and locate the donation chest. Donate items until your contribution points earn you a Shepherd's Crook of Humility (Replica). Once you receive it, the quest objective updates automatically — return to Gareth.

Quest 3: Community Service — Zoo

Quest Giver Gareth (auto-offered after Quest 2)
Objective Donate to the Moonglow Zoo collection until you receive a For the Life of Britannia Sash, then return it to Gareth
Chain Cloak of Humility (Quest 3 of 5)

Next, Gareth directs you to the Moonglow Zoo, located a short distance south of Moonglow. Find the donation chest near the entrance and donate items until you earn a For the Life of Britannia Sash. Return to Gareth with it.

Quest 4: Community Service — Library

Quest Giver Gareth (auto-offered after Quest 3)
Objective Donate to the Britain Library collection until you receive a Special Printing of 'Virtue' by Lord British, then return it to Gareth
Chain Cloak of Humility (Quest 4 of 5)

Gareth's final charity request sends you to the Britain Library, located north of Castle British's gates. Donate until you earn a Special Printing of 'Virtue' by Lord British. Return to Gareth.

Gareth commends your generosity and encourages you to continue contributing to the community beyond this quest.

Quest 5: Who's Most Humble

Quest Giver Gareth (auto-offered after Quest 4)
Objective Visit seven humble citizens of Britannia, trade items between them, and obtain an Iron Chain to return to Gareth
Reward Gold Shield (if accepted) or Grey Cloak → Cloak of Humility (if refused — see The Final Choice)
Chain Cloak of Humility (Quest 5 of 5 — Final)

This is the capstone of the entire quest chain. Gareth challenges you to find seven citizens spread across the towns of Britannia and determine who best exemplifies the virtue of Humility. He gives you a Plain Grey Cloak (which you must wear) and a Brass Ring to start.

The Seven Humble Citizens

The seven NPCs are scattered across Skara Brae, Minoc, Britain, and an island town. They are:

NPC Title Location
Maribel The Waitress Britain
Dierdre The Beggar Britain (Felucca)
Kevin The Butcher Minoc
Jason The Healer Skara Brae
Walton The Horse Trainer Skara Brae (Felucca)
Nelson The Shepherd Near Jhelom area
Sean The Blacksmith Minoc (Felucca)

How the Trading Puzzle Works

Each NPC needs a specific item and will give you a different item in exchange. The items and their assignments are randomized each time you accept the quest, creating a unique trading chain. The items that circulate through the chain are:

  • Brass Ring
  • Seasoned Skillet
  • Village Cauldron
  • Short Stool
  • Friendship Mug
  • Worn Hammer
  • Pair of Work Gloves
  • Iron Chain (the final item you need)

You start with the Brass Ring. When you visit an NPC while wearing the Grey Cloak:

  1. They greet you as you approach (if wearing the cloak and haven't traded with them yet).
  2. Double-click them to interact. If you have the item they need, they take it and give you a new item in return.
  3. If you don't have what they need, they tell you what they're looking for (or what they'd give you), giving you a clue about which NPC to visit next.
  4. Each NPC can only be traded with once — after the exchange, they're done.

Work your way through the chain: give the Brass Ring to whoever needs it, receive a new item, find the next NPC who needs that item, and continue until the final exchange produces the Iron Chain.

Tips for the Trading Puzzle

  • Wear the Grey Cloak at all times. NPCs only recognize you as a quest participant if you're wearing it.
  • Talk to everyone. If you don't have what an NPC needs, they'll hint at what item they want or what they'd give you. Use these hints to map out the chain.
  • The chain is randomized. There's no fixed order — the item assignments shuffle each time. You need to figure out the sequence by visiting NPCs.
  • Gareth reacts to the Iron Chain. When you approach Gareth with the Iron Chain as a quest item in your pack, he'll comment on it — that's your cue to turn in the quest.

The Final Choice

When you return the Iron Chain to Gareth, he offers you a Gold Shield as your reward — a symbol of accomplishment for everything you've done.

You have two options:

  • Accept the Gold Shield — You receive the Gold Shield, a gold-hued Order Shield. The quest items are cleaned up and the quest ends. Gareth commends you, but also notes that there may be more to learn about Humility.
  • Refuse the reward — This is the Humble choice. All quest items are cleaned up except the Grey Cloak, which becomes bound to you. You do not receive the Gold Shield, but the Grey Cloak is now flagged as yours.

If you refused the reward and kept the Grey Cloak, take it to the Shrine of Humility (located at approximately 4274, 3698 in Trammel or Felucca). As you approach the shrine while carrying or wearing the cloak, a strange energy envelops you and the cloak transforms into the Cloak of Humility — the true reward of the quest chain.

"As you near the shrine a strange energy envelops you. Suddenly, your cloak is transformed into the Cloak of Humility!"
