Lord Soth, Knight of the Black Rose
Overview
Lord Soth, Knight of the Black Rose is a powerful champion-level boss found in Madon, north of Unblovia. A fearsome Death Knight mounted on a Nightmare, Soth combines devastating melee attacks with high-level magery, necromancy, and unique special abilities including the power to kill with a single word and summon an undead army. He is one of the most dangerous encounters on Banes World and should not be attempted alone or unprepared.
Location
To reach Lord Soth, take the portal to Madon--Unblovia and follow the road heading northwest. He spawns in that region as the Horror of Krynn champion encounter.
Champion Spawn Waves
Like all champion spawns, Lord Soth does not appear immediately. You must fight through four progressively harder waves of undead creatures to fill the spawn candles and summon him. The title ranks earned as you progress through the spawn are Bane, Challenger, and Slayer.
| Wave | Creatures |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | Skeletons, Wraiths |
| Level 2 | Spectres, Bone Magi |
| Level 3 | Undead Knights, Liches |
| Level 4 | Lich Lords, Skeletal Dragons |
The spawn difficulty ramps up significantly at Level 3, where Undead Knights appear — these are the same mounted knights that Soth himself summons during the boss fight (see Summon Undead Army). They ride Nightmares and hit hard, so be prepared for a serious jump in difficulty. Level 4 introduces Skeletal Dragons and Lich Lords, both of which are dangerous casters and heavy hitters. Make sure your group is fully prepared before pushing into the final wave, because once the candles are filled, Lord Soth himself will spawn.

Special Abilities
Power Word Kill
Lord Soth's most dangerous ability. When his health drops below 250 hit points, he can unleash Power Word Kill on all players within 1 tile, dealing 50,000–60,000 damage — an instant kill against any character. This ability has a 15-minute cooldown between uses.
When it triggers, you will see the message: "The Death Knight has a remarkable power over death, the ability to kill with a single word... too bad you were listening!"
How to survive: Stay at range when Soth's health gets low. Melee fighters should be prepared to disengage quickly when he nears 250 HP. Archers and mages have a significant advantage during the final phase since Power Word Kill only hits players within 1 tile.
Summon Undead Army
When Soth's health drops below 500 hit points, he begins summoning an undead army each time he is struck or strikes a target in melee. He summons a random number of Undead Knights and Wailing Banshees (up to 13 at a time) that fight alongside him. He will not summon additional undead while any from a previous wave are still alive within range.
Undead Knights ride Nightmares, have 400–600 HP, deal 8–18 damage, are immune to lethal poison, immune to barding, and drop rich loot including plate armor pieces. When they die, they dismount and their Nightmare is destroyed.
Weapon Abilities
Soth randomly uses Double Strike and Armor Ignore as weapon special moves, making his already high melee damage even more dangerous. He also wields the UnHoly Sword, which has Hit Dispel, Hit Poison Area, and Hit Fireball effects.
Combat Taunts
Soth will occasionally speak during combat, taunting fighters with lines such as "I do not fear Death, for Death and I are old friends" and "I've walked the world in undeath since the Cataclysm and you think you can defeat me?"
Loot
Lord Soth drops generous loot from multiple loot packs (Ultra Rich ×2, Filthy Rich ×2, Medium Scrolls ×2) plus 200–250 gold. He also has a chance to drop the following special items:

Strategy
Group Composition
Bring a well-coordinated group. Soth hits extremely hard (45–55 damage with weapon abilities on top), has high resists across the board, auto-dispels summons, and cannot be provoked. You will need dedicated healers and damage dealers.
Phase 1: Above 500 HP
This is the most straightforward phase. Soth fights as a powerful melee combatant with magery. Focus damage and keep your healers active. Watch for his Hit Poison Area triggering on nearby players.
Phase 2: Below 500 HP — Undead Army
When Soth drops below 500 HP, every melee exchange can spawn a wave of Undead Knights and Wailing Banshees. Have some of your group ready to handle the adds while others continue focusing on Soth. The adds stop spawning as long as any remain alive nearby, so killing them quickly triggers more waves — consider whether to clear them or leave a few alive to prevent additional spawns.
Phase 3: Below 250 HP — Power Word Kill
This is the most dangerous phase. All melee fighters should disengage when Soth nears 250 HP. Power Word Kill instantly kills anyone within 1 tile. Switch to ranged attacks — archery, magery, and other ranged damage are essential here. After he uses Power Word Kill, the 15-minute cooldown gives melee fighters a safe window to re-engage and finish the fight.
General Tips
- Bring ranged damage. Archers and mages are critical for the final phase.
- Watch your positioning. Stay spread out to minimize the impact of Hit Poison Area and to avoid multiple people getting caught by Power Word Kill.
- Don't rely on summons. Soth auto-dispels with 100% chance. Summoned creatures are useless against him.
- Prepare for the adds. The undead army can overwhelm an unprepared group. Have a plan for handling Undead Knights on Nightmares.
- Carry the right slayer weapons. Soth himself is undead-themed but doesn't have a specific vulnerability in the code. Focus on maximizing your raw damage output.
- Everyone who fights gets power scrolls. You don't need to land the killing blow — just be in combat with Soth within the last 30 seconds of the fight to qualify for scroll drops.
