Secrets of Malas and Madon
The 9 Secrets of Malas are a series of hidden containers scattered throughout the Malas facet. Each container is concealed in an out-of-the-way location and serves as a one-way teleportation link — by placing a blank Recall Rune inside the container, the rune becomes marked with the coordinates of a secret destination, allowing you to Recall or Gate Travel there at will.
This system also exists on the Madon facet with the same passage layout, giving explorers on both maps a set of hidden locations to discover.
How It Works
- Locate one of the 9 hidden containers in the world. These are small pouches (or in one case, a bone container shaped like a skeleton) placed at ground level in hard-to-spot locations. Using the Circle of Transparency (Alt+Z by default) is highly recommended, as many containers are hidden behind trees, walls, or terrain.
- Open the container and drop a blank Recall Rune inside it. The container automatically marks the rune with the secret destination's coordinates and a description reading "strange location."
- Retrieve the rune from the container. You can now use Recall, Sacred Journey, or Gate Travel with the marked rune to reach the hidden destination.
That's all there is to it — the containers don't consume the rune, and you can mark as many runes as you like. Once marked, the rune works like any other marked rune and can be placed in a Runebook for easy access.
Locked Containers
One of the nine containers (Location 6) is locked and will auto-relock five minutes after being opened. You will need to pick the lock using Lockpicking to access it. The lock difficulty is set high, so come prepared. Once unlocked, you have five minutes to drop your rune in before the container relocks itself.
Bone Containers
One container (Location 8) appears as a skeleton rather than a pouch. It functions identically — open it, drop a rune in, and retrieve the marked rune — but its different appearance can make it easier or harder to spot depending on the surroundings.
The 9 Locations
The following are the known container locations and where each marked rune will take you. All destinations lead to remote areas of the Broken Mountains, Dry Highlands, or other otherwise-inaccessible terrain.
| # | Container Location | Destination | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Behind a tree on the north side of the Northern Crags | Broken Mountains | — |
| 2 | Above the Grimswind Ruins, behind the trees | Small floating island north of the Northern Crags | — |
| 3 | Inside the Northern Orc Outpost, below the bubbling cauldron | Broken Mountains | — |
| 4 | Near the Albino Tree, west of the Bridge of the Divide | Broken Mountains | — |
| 5 | Behind the bar at Hanse's Hostel (along the Luna–Umbra road) | Broken Mountains | — |
| 6 | East of the Crystal Cave in the Crystal Fens, among the crystals | Southern edge of the Broken Mountains | Locked — auto-relocks after 5 minutes |
| 7 | Basement of the southwest battlement surrounding Luna (access via the stables stairway in the northeast corner) | Tip of the Broken Mountains | — |
| 8 | Dungeon Doom, in Victoria's room at the foot of the candelabra on the northern wall | Dry Highlands | Bone container (skeleton appearance) |
| 9 | North of the abandoned orc fort in the Living Forest, near the giant fairie tree | Northern Crags above the Crystal Cave | — |
Madon Facet
The Madon facet contains an identical set of 9 secret passages using the same relative coordinates. If you've found the locations on Malas, the same spots on Madon will have containers as well. The destinations on Madon lead to the equivalent areas on that map.
Administrators can generate or remove Madon passages independently of Malas using the [SecretLocGenMadon and [SecretLocDeleteMadon commands.
Tips
- Use Circle of Transparency. Most of these containers are deliberately hidden behind trees, walls, and terrain objects. You will not find them without transparency enabled.
- Bring a lockpick. Location 6 is locked and requires Lockpicking to access. The lock resets after 5 minutes, so have your rune ready before you pick it.
- Mark multiple runes. The containers are reusable — there's no limit to how many runes you can mark. Consider marking extras for guildmates or to keep in a runebook.
- Explore the destinations. The secret locations often contain interesting terrain, rare spawns, or simply scenic views that reward the effort of finding the containers.
Admin Commands
| Command | Access Level | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| [SecretLocGen | Administrator | Generates all 9 Malas mark containers and the Forgotten Pyramid |
| [SecretLocDelete | Administrator | Removes all Malas mark containers |
| [SecretLocGenMadon | Administrator | Generates all 9 Madon mark containers |
| [SecretLocDeleteMadon | Administrator | Removes all Madon mark containers |
Containers are tracked using the WeakEntityCollection system, so deletion cleanly removes only the generated containers without affecting other world items.
