The Stygian Abyss, also known as the Underworld, is an expansive dungeon beneath the Ter Mur facet. It is home to Mini-Champion Spawns, challenging puzzles, and powerful bosses including Navrey Night-Eyes. Access requires the Stygian Abyss Expansion.
Overview
The Underworld is a vast subterranean dungeon divided into numerous named regions, each containing unique encounters. The primary activities within the dungeon include:
- Mini-Champion Spawns — Wave-based encounters that drop Essences and Imbuing ingredients.
- Navrey Night-Eyes — A powerful spider boss with a unique pillar mechanic.
- Sir Wilber's Puzzle Room — A timed series of logic puzzles.
- The Experimental Room — A color-matching challenge across three rooms.
- The Maze of Death — A trapped labyrinth requiring a Golden Compass to navigate.
- The Underworld Puzzle — A standalone crystal-lock puzzle found deeper in the dungeon.
Mini-Champion Spawns
Mini-Champion Spawns are wave-based encounters found throughout the Underworld. Each spawn progresses through multiple levels of increasingly difficult creatures, culminating in a Renowned boss. Clearing all waves of a level advances the spawn to the next. After the Renowned boss is defeated, the spawn resets after approximately 5 minutes.
Each mini-champion area is associated with a specific Essence used in Imbuing. Essences can drop from any creature killed within the region (approximately 5% chance), and higher-fame creatures spawned by the encounter may also carry them.

Renowned Creatures and Imbuing Gems
All Renowned bosses from the mini-champion spawns have a 50% chance to drop one or more Imbuing Gems on death. The possible gems are:
Navrey Night-Eyes is a powerful spider boss located in the Underworld. She has a unique encounter mechanic involving three stone pillars that, when activated correctly, trigger a devastating rock fall.
The Pillars
Three stone pillars surround Navrey's lair. Each pillar has a different activation timer — one stays "hot" for 3 seconds, another for 6 seconds, and the third for 9 seconds. These timers rotate among the pillars once every 24 hours.
To activate the mechanic:
- Approach a glowing (lit) pillar and double-click it while within 3 tiles.
- The pillar enters a "hot" state and begins a countdown, flashing between colors.
- Activate the remaining pillars while the others are still hot.
- If all three pillars are hot simultaneously, a barrage of rocks rains down on Navrey, dealing 100–150 damage per tick over approximately 30 seconds.
After the rock rain ends (or after 5 minutes), the pillars reset and can be used again. Successfully using the pillars also grants Navrey a flag that may affect her loot.
Strategy
- The pillar with the shortest timer (3 seconds) should be activated last, since it expires the fastest.
- Coordinate with your group to activate all three in quick succession.
- Navrey respawns 10 minutes after being killed.
- She drops Bottle of Ichor and Spider Carapace as imbuing ingredients.
Sir Wilber's Puzzle Room
Deep within the Underworld, an NPC named Sir Wilber has set up a puzzle challenge. Completing it ultimately rewards an Experimental Gem, which grants access to the Experimental Room.
Getting Started
- Find Sir Wilber's puzzle area. A book on-site provides instructions.
- Double-click the Magic Key to receive a copy. This starts a 30-minute timer.
- While carrying the key, you can enter the Puzzle Room via the nearby teleporter.
- If the timer expires while you are inside the Puzzle Room, you are teleported out and all puzzle keys and boards are destroyed.
The Puzzle Boxes
Inside the Puzzle Room are three puzzle boxes:
| Box | Puzzle Type | Key Required | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| West Box | Circuit/Maze Puzzle | Magic Key | Copper Key |
| East Box | Circuit/Maze Puzzle | Magic Key | Gold Key (if you already have a Copper Key) |
| North Box | Mastermind Puzzle | Gold Key | Experimental Gem |
You must complete both maze puzzles (West and East boxes) to earn the Copper Key and then the Gold Key. The Gold Key unlocks the North Box, which presents a Mastermind-style puzzle.
Circuit/Maze Puzzle
The maze puzzle presents a grid. You must trace a path that closes the circuit from start to finish. Selecting an incorrect tile triggers an electric shock that deals escalating damage over several seconds.
Each puzzle board has a 10-minute lifespan once taken from the box. You can only carry one puzzle board at a time.
Mastermind Puzzle
The Mastermind puzzle works like the classic code-breaking game. You must guess the correct combination of colored cylinders. After each guess, the puzzle tells you how many are in the correct position. Use deduction to narrow down the solution.
Solving the Mastermind puzzle awards the Experimental Gem and causes the Magic Key to expire, ending your Puzzle Room session.
The Experimental Room
The Experimental Room is Sir Wilber's second challenge and requires a completed Experimental Gem from the Puzzle Room. This is a timed, color-matching puzzle spread across three rooms of increasing difficulty.
How It Works
- Stand at the entrance to the Experimental Room and double-click your Experimental Gem.
- Confirm activation. This starts a 30-minute self-destruct timer on the gem.
- Your gem will begin changing color. Each room has colored floor areas. You must stand on the correct color to neutralize your gem before its state worsens.
Color Pairs
Colors exist in opposing pairs. When your gem turns a color, you must stand on its opposite to neutralize it:
| Gem Color | Stand On |
|---|---|
| White (Cold) | Pink (Warm) |
| Pink (Warm) | White (Cold) |
| Orange (Cure) | Light Green (Poison) |
| Light Green (Poison) | Orange (Cure) |
Extreme States
If you fail to neutralize a color in time, the gem shifts to an extreme state. Extreme states require a two-step neutralization — first step back to the regular state, then neutralize to grey. If you fail to neutralize an extreme state in time, you are expelled from the room and must start over (the 30-minute timer does not reset).
| Regular | Escalates To | Neutralize Extreme With |
|---|---|---|
| Pink (Warm) | Red (Blazing) | White brings it to Pink, then Blue neutralizes directly |
| White (Cold) | Blue (Freezing) | Pink brings it to White, then Red neutralizes directly |
| Orange (Cure) | Brown (Greater Cure) | Light Green brings it to Orange, then Dark Green neutralizes directly |
| Light Green (Poison) | Dark Green (Lethal) | Orange brings it to Light Green, then Brown neutralizes directly |
Room Progression
| Room | Colors Available | Cycles to Complete |
|---|---|---|
| Room 1 | White, Pink, Red, Blue | 5–8 |
| Room 2 | White, Pink, Red, Blue, Orange, Light Green | 10–15 |
| Room 3 | White, Pink, Red, Blue, Orange, Light Green, Dark Green, Brown | 15–25 |
After completing Room 3, you are congratulated and the final reward room is unlocked. Place your completed gem in the chest to receive a random decorative reward.
Rewards
| Item | Relative Chance |
|---|---|
| Stalagmite | Common |
| Flowstone | Uncommon |
| Canvasless Easel | Rare |
| Hanging Chainmail Legs | Rare |
| Hanging Ringmail Tunic | Rare |
| Plucked Chicken | Rare |
| Colorful Tapestry | Rare |
| Two-Story Banner | Rare |
The Maze of Death
The Maze of Death is a trapped labyrinth in the Underworld. A single safe path winds through the maze; stepping off the path triggers a random trap.
The Golden Compass
Near the entrance to the maze, you can pick up a Golden Compass. It has a 30-minute lifespan. While carrying the compass inside the maze, a directional gump appears on your screen showing arrows pointing toward safe tiles adjacent to your current position. The compass updates each time you move.
Traps
Stepping on an unsafe tile triggers one of four random traps, dealing 75–150 damage:
| Trap | Damage Type | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Searing Heat | Fire | Flame burst visual effect |
| Sharp Blade | Physical | Blade strike |
| Lightning Arc | Energy | Lightning bolt effect |
| Toxic Vapor | Poison | Poison cloud, applies Deadly Poison |
Death in the Maze
If you die inside the trapped area of the maze, your ghost (and corpse) are teleported back to the entrance after a few seconds. You will need to resurrect and start over.
Spell Restrictions
The following spells are blocked inside the Maze of Death:
- Mark
- Gate Travel
- Teleport
Tips
- Always pick up the Golden Compass before entering.
- Move carefully — follow the compass arrows one tile at a time.
- When the compass arrows flicker near the end of the maze, you are close to the exit.
- Bring poison cures, as the Toxic Vapor trap applies Deadly Poison.
The Underworld Puzzle
Deeper in the Underworld, a metal chest contains a logic puzzle. Double-clicking the chest gives you a Puzzle Board (30-minute lifespan, 24-hour cooldown between attempts).
How It Works
The puzzle board displays a grid with four rows. Each row can hold a colored piece in one of three colors (Red, Blue, or Green) and one of four sizes (Single, Double, Triple, or Bar). You must manipulate the pieces to match a hidden solution.
Pieces can be moved between rows. When two pieces of the same size but different colors combine, they produce the third color:
- Red + Blue = Green
- Red + Green = Blue
- Blue + Green = Red
Same-color pieces of the same size combine into a larger piece of that color. Pieces of different sizes interact through splitting and combining mechanics.
You have a maximum of 8 attempts to solve the puzzle. Successfully matching all four rows to the solution unlocks the crystal lock.
